10Nov tunes I’m diggin’

Need a cure for the Christmas music insanity? (Yeah, Dish has already inserted several channels right in the middle of our TV lineup that play various Christmas genres 24/7.) It’s been a few months since I’ve posted a music playlist. Here are some of my new randoms – some smooth instrumental, some for working out, and some rediscovered old gems.

Here’s my new YouTube playlist (below). Click on the tape icon next to the play button to choose the song you want. <UPDATE 11/21> I noticed that a couple of the songs only play if you go to YouTube.com (link above). I wonder why they don’t allow external embedding? </UPDATE>

  1. Two Fingers – Fools Rhythm (Downtempo bass-boomin workout instrumental.)
  2. Cee-Lo Green – Fuck You (The title doesn’t seem to match the motown vibe of this song… at first. But watch how this YouTube user has configured the lyrics on the screen and you get a better feel for it.)
  3. Beach House – Zebra (Dreamy, inspiring, and a little beachy. Incredibly catchy chorus. “Black and white horse arching among us.”)
  4. Wolfgang Gartner – Wolfgang’s 5th Symphony (Radio Edit) (This is how you mix a Mozart track into a dance tune.)
  5. Villagers – Becoming a Jackal (Channeling the voice of Paul Simon, a goosebumps/beautiful song.)
  6. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – Pieces Form The Whole (These two created The Social Network soundtrack, literally half the reason I liked the movie so much. Another mellow Reznor instrumental project in the vein of Ghosts from 2008.)
  7. Metric – Gimme Sympathy (Great guitar pop and a front woman who knows how to put on a show – although the music video is a sad representation of their live energy.)
  8. Gossip – Heavy Cross (Song 2 of 3 in a row: female vocals/guitar riff heaven.)
  9. Phantogram – Mouthful of Diamonds (This song leaves me speechless – totally puts you in a trance. Had the privilege of seeing them at Zanzabar in Louisville.)
  10. k.d. lang – Hallelujah (Live) (There are many renditions of this song, but lang’s easily brings me to tears. I got to see her perform this at the Ryman.)
  11. Das Racist – Rainbow in the Dark (I’m gonna follow up Hallelujah with the most ridiculously funny track in this list. “Catch me solving mysteries like Wikipedia Brown.”)
  12. Audioslave – Be Yourself (One of Chris Cornell’s many brilliant projects.)
  13. Gorillaz – Empire Ants (feat. Little Dragon) (One of those tunes that waits about two minutes before kicking into full gear.)
  14. Mikky Ekko – Who Are You Really? (Live) (I actually like the sound of the studio track better, but he’s great live. One of the artists that make Nashville such a great town, he used to perform with Space Capone, too.)
