Summer Movies I Want to See, 2011

The 3rd annual preview of summer movies… that I’d like to see, so you can count on several indie flicks to be part of this list. I’ve heard mention that this could be one of the worse summer movie seasons in years – but I couldn’t manage to narrow it down to any less than 28 films.   • Thor – May 6 – Already getting rave reviews with Russell Crowe-replacement Aussie. 8 out of 10.
  • The Beaver – May 6 – Jodie Foster directs and acts with Mel Gibson.
  • Bridesmaids – May 11 – Like The Hangover… with SNL female cast. 8 out of 10.
  • Hesher – May 13 – Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a deadbeat. Also starring Natalie Portman. (Limited release.)
  • The Hangover Part II – May 26
  • Kung Fu Panda 2 – May 26
  • The Tree of Life – May 27 – Brad Pitt. (Limited release.)
  • !Women Art Revolution – Jun 1 – Lynn Hershman Leeson documentary. (Limited release.)

  • Beginners – Jun 3 – Ewan McGregor discovers that his 75 year-old father (Christopher Plummer) is gay. (Limited release.)

  • One Lucky Elephant – Jun 8 – Documentary about freeing a circus element. (Limited release.)
  • Super 8 – Jun 10 – J. J. Abrams, Elle Fanning, Steven Spielberg-produced. 8 out of 10.
  • Page One: Inside The New York Times – Jun 17 – Documentary. (Limited release.)
  • Green Lantern – Jun 17
  • Cars 2 – Jun 24
  • Bad Teacher – Jun 24 – Comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake.
  • Raw Faith – Jun 24 – Documentary following Marilyn Sewell for two years as she considers leaving the ministry and falling in love. (Limited release.)
  • Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop – Jun 24 – Chronicling his 32-city 2010 tour. (Limited release.)
  • Project Nim – Jul 8 – Documentary about a chimpanzee in the 70s raised by humans. (Limited release.)
  • Harry Potter – Jul 15
  • Captain America – Jul 22
  • Friends With Benefits – Jul 22 – Love and Other Drugs, Part 2?  Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis.
  • Cowboys & Aliens – Jul 29 – Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Jon Favreau.
  • The Change-Up – Aug 5 – A comedy in which a married guy (Jason Bateman) switches bodies with his best friend (Ryan Reynolds) in order to woo his co-worker (Olivia Wilde).
  • Higher Ground – Aug 12 – Vera Farmiga’s spiritual directorial debut. (Limited release.)
  • Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark – Aug 12 – 1973 horror remake (Guillermo del Toro, Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes).
  • The Interrupters – TBA – Three “violence interrupters” try to protect their Chicago community. Documentary. (Limited release, also will be on PBS Frontline this year.
