Election 04 Websites

Oct27 Update: Alternative candidate comparison resouces added. Now that I've voted (early), I hope these links will be useful to at least one or two other people that might run across it. Otherwise, it will be interesting to see what new voting sites pop up by 2008!

It's about time I start looking for a candidate to vote for. In addition to the two rich candidates (you have to have a lot of money to run successful campaigns), you can actually vote for someone who has ideals that match your own! Yes, there are always dozens of presidential candidates.
Your Vote Matters - Register or change your address by Oct2 (one month deadline before election)!
Vote-Smart.org - Probably the most established site. I consulted this for the 2000 elections, as well.
DNet.org (DemocracyNet) - The League of Women Voters has an even more respectable source here. Found this a little too late, but it lays out candidate comparisons better than Vote Smart.
OnTheIssues.org - Another decent alternative to Project Vote Smart. Easiest site to view a candidate's summary of all campaign issues in one page. Beware of annoying pop-ups.

Some other non-essential helps during your elector journey:
Politics1.com - I wouldn't call it "The Most Comprehensive Online Guide to American Politics", but there is some good P2004 info here.
PresidentMatch.com - Only shows three two candidates (I don't even know Kucinish), but here is a simple comparison chart to start.
Political Compass - determine where you lie on the political and social grid. Me: Economic Left/Right = -2.75, Social Libertarian/Authoritarian = 0.05 [thanks, Urban Scrawl]
SelectSmart.com - Despite the annoying ads, I like the concept of this site in general - not just for elections: select the areas that you like and it'll come up with your best match (try Harry Potter, for example). I was only partially surprised when I matched up with the dorky Green Party's Cobb and LaMarche.
TheRealDifference.org - Find out if there really is much of a difference between Democrats and Republicans... and why we need to reform the voting process to include minority parties.

Sep8 update: testing trackbacks for JuicedThoughts and kottke.org links from 2nd comment. Also added Compass & YVM links.

The Democratic Convention has produced some interesting headlines. See the Dems2004.org site for transcripts and other info after these links have expired. If the Republican Convention is as interesting next month, I'll post another comment....

In other political news, poor Florida still can't get it together with their voting machines!

9/11, Republican Convention, and Voter Registration

First of all, I've added the Your Vote Matters link to the original post so you can register to vote. This will probably be my last commentary about elections until after the big day on Nov2:

The GOP Convention (notice the wWw in the site header) from Aug30-Sep2 didn't produce as many headlines, at least from inside the building. Here's some "best of the best" quotes and a summary; this editorial piece will give you something to chew on, too. There were some interesting protests, including BikesAgainstBush.com.
