Labor Day Visitors

These past few days were quite interesting. Took a few shots with both digital cameras (got one on my new Treo - see the upcoming blog entry about that purchase): 0408 Gallery. It was sad coming back to work, especially since I'm really starting to hate spending 8 hours of my day in an ice box with no windows. The following is a fun meander through Labor Day Weekend at the Megs'n'JJ residence.

Evan, one of my groomsmen, and Heather made a planned holiday weekend drive from NY to TN. It proved to be too much for his truck and we were frantic on Friday evening as we tried to find a place that could take a look under the hood before everyone closed shop for the long weekend. Fortunately, Ace's Transmission helpfully diagnosed the problem; more Southern hospitality was at hand when we found Franklin Muffler Shop who ended up doing the final repairs.

In the meantime, we were supposed to be helping set up for a friend's surprise party. Megan and Heather somehow got that done, but had to come back to the house to entertain a couple of surprise guests. Ryan and Rhett are Canadians; Megan has known Ryan for about six years, but he happened to be driving through Nashville for the first time and decided he and his friend needed a place to stay the night. I was initially against it, but the Canadian accents amused me enough to let them stay. It was also interesting when we all agreed on Japanese only to arrive at Ken's with Rhett saying, "What's sushi?". Weirder yet, Ryan's cousin, Bob, went to a Quebec exchange program with me in '98! Megan's "Twilight Zone" Friday was topped off when her first boyfriend made a call to the house that night; he was also coming in to Nashville... but we never did hear from him again *shrugs*.

When morning arrived, after eating some yummy omelets, Evan and I drove to the Farmer's Market (where Megs and/or I pick up our veggies every other Saturday). Since the auto shop happened to be next door, we had left the truck there in Franklin overnight. Evan and I did some more repair errands and later met up with the girls to shop around Franklin a little bit. It's a cute little town with uselessly expensive antique stores... and a Ben and Jerry's :-) When we got back home, we had some filet mignon off the grill and watched the *Red Dragon* DVD, which Megan and I hadn't even unwrapped yet. Highly recommended thriller.

On Sunday, Evan made some waffles after church. For some reason, I then agreed to run 15 miles with him. Not thinking about the afternoon heat, we collapsed on the living room floor after 10 miles (two loops around the neighborhood instead of three). After showering and dressing up (see Ev and Heather photo), we headed to the Melting Pot (another photo). Find one in your closest American city if you've never been - bring lots of money.

Since Evan's truck wouldn't be ready until Tuesday, we decided to relax most of the day and visit the Frist Center for a few hours. The new Highlights From the Hunter Museum exhibit was terrific. We topped off their visit with a game night and quiche, with special guest Janelle. Since we couldn't agree on anything to play, Fictionary was the final choice even though there were only four of us. Evan and I wanted to go out and buy Milles Bournes so we could introduce one of our favorite games to the girls; they weren't up for it :-(

Megan and I dragged ourselves out of bed yesterday morning while Evan and Heather made the long drive back home. Hurricane weather made their trek a wet one, although it never did make it to Nashville. Like most folks', our Labor Day had little to do with the holiday - although it's one of those commemorative days of rest anyway. I'd like to say that we spent it reverently.

Very cool. Looks like y'all had a fun filled weekend (with the exception of Ev's truck needing repair.)

"We will have fun" in Concord on Reese's birthday in a couple of weeks.
