I'm posting this a week late, but I wanted to spread the word about this concert Megan and I went to last Saturday. Mindy Smith and Tift Merritt are wrapping up their tour together, but Smith is a local and she'll be at the Opry next Saturday; you have probably heard her version of "Jolene" on the radio. Merritt and York are not as well known yet.
It's hard to go wrong with a Belcourt show or movie (Merritt enjoyed making cracks about the venue being a movie theater). All three artists were pretty good, but Tift Merritt was definitely the most enjoyable. She has an interesting way of dancing around on stage, but it's fun to see someone enjoy performing so much. Her band was weird, too.... Megan is on the Lost Highway Records street team, so we handed out posters and got Merritt's signature.
Kate York is a local artist that Mindy Smith is friends with; it will be interesting to see how her career progresses. It was just her, a guitar, and her backup singer. Her blues/folk record hasn't been released yet, just a 5-song EP so far.
Mindy Smith has had an interesting career so far. She actually tried to get her start in the Christian music scene (very big in Nashville), but wasn't liked there for some reason. I did notice that she was definitely pretty spacey in her Belcourt performance - don't know if that's her personality or if she was on something! She didn't have great chemistry with her band, either, but the music was decent.
