I was perusing some of the Google News tech articles when I ran across mention of Microsoft developing a new antivirus software, called OneCare. Then I noticed an article about Eiger (Windows XP Starter), XBox 360, MSN Search Toolbar, Office 2006, Security Advisories (à la Secunia), Mobile 5, Sun collaboration… and several other MS news items from the past few days. Seems that MS has been busy with a lot of new developments! I've since discovered InsideMicrosoft and WinInsider: two great MS news sources for this kind of thing.
InsideMicrosoft is one of the new WordPress sites by Blog News Channel. While BNC does not have the common About pages like most sites, their site content is more helpful than just the plain new releases you'll find on most other sites. WinInsider mentions just about anything that InsideMicrosoft might have missed (in this case, the Sun collaboration news was the only thing missing from InsideMicrosoft).
I'll let you check out the sites for this past week's news, but here are a few of my thoughts about all of the latest developments. I'm concerned about MS Antispyware now that OneCare is under development. Antispyware isn't even out of beta yet, so who knows where MS plans on going with it! The main doubt I have is Microsoft's ability to interoperate all of these new apps, services, and operating sytems. How well will Longhorn, Office 2006, OneNote, and OneCare work together (look out for the red BSOD)? This is the main reason I've been exploring free, open source alternatives to M$. As a final concern, I'm wondering what the Windows XP embedded people think of Eiger!

MS AntiSpyware & MS AntiVirus are two different products with two different purposes. Supposedly the AntiVirus program will not be free and is for catching viruses, worms, and trojans. AntiSpyware is supposed to be free of charge and targets malware infections.
But yeah, they do have a lot of products in the works. I guess you heard about XP 64-bit Edition? It was just released a few weeks ago. However, it really is not an OS the average user will use. It's really only usefull if you need to address over 4 GB of RAM for compiling (video editing for example.)

The press release says OneCare is going to include anti-spyware, so I think my concern is still valid, brotherman.
Windows OneCare is being designed to address core safety concerns such as worms, viruses and spyware, but also to span broader PC health issues: helping protect electronic assets such as digital photos, music, financial data and software.
I did hear about 64-bit XP. I should have mentioned that one - but like you said, I don't know of anyone who needs it!
I'm sure AS & AV will be available as stand alone products. Us geeks would complain to much if you could only get them bundled with OneCare. Did you hear about the outrage from the tech community when SP2 was released and a lot of people complained about Windows Security Center? I personally like it. Although I don't have the "all systems green" setup. I have my own preferences for the firewall and auto-updates.
I hope its not as bloated as NSW. That would be insane.
It's good that this product will appear to clean out windows temp files. To many temp files can really slow a system down. Even a brand new 3 GHz box...
