This is simply a depository of the OLD monthly homepage Bible verses.  I save them because they give somewhat of an insight as to what I am focusing on at that point in my life, or something interesting that I ran across.  Find all new entries in the Beliefs Blog.

 Words For May [2004]

Feeling Spiritual Presence
God's Son has all the brightness of God's own glory and is like him in every way.
    ^ Hebrews 1:3 (CEV)

Adrenaline isn't the only thing that gives you an unexplainable feeling when you're scared or excited. God's Spirit waxes and wanes through both believers and non-believers. Balaam the ancient seer didn't even know God, but the Spirit led him nonetheless. On the other hand, when you seek God out by being satisfied in him, that is when God is most glorified. This is the point of the book Desiring God, as well as many other popular Christian books. Jesus said, "Have faith in me, and you will have life-giving water flowing from deep inside you" (John 7:38 (CEV)). You've also heard it over and over as psalmists yearn for the presence of God. See also Ps139:7, Mat18:20, John20:29 & 7:39, Heb11:1, 1Cor2:13.

He was wounded and crushed
because of our sins;
by taking our punishment,
he made us completely well.
    ^ Isaiah 53:5 (CEV)

The Passion in the Gospels: Mat27, Mar15, Luk23, Joh18-19
I finally got a chance to see The Passion last night (Apr6). The movie has inspired me to base this month's Words on the events portrayed in the film. What better time to see the movie, as it is indeed "Passion Week" which represents the last week of Jesus' life, leading up to Christians' glorious Easter Sunday. Read more of my comments and info about the film.

 Words For March

The body of Christ has many different parts, just as any other body does. Some of us are Jews, and others are Gentiles. Some of us are slaves, and others are free. But God's Spirit baptized each of us and made us part of the body of Christ. Now we each drink from that same Spirit....  A body isn't really a body, unless there is more than one part. It takes many parts to make a single body.
    ^ 1 Corinthians 12:12-20 (CEV)

Does this allude to church membership? If you are a faithful Christian, should you be a member somewhere? If you are a professional football player, don't you have to be part of a team? Another defense against this passage is the hypocricy of the church - see Romans 14.

Now Sir, if this is founded in truth, I apprehend you will embrace every opportunity, to eradicate that train of absurd and false ideas and opinions, which so generally prevails with respect to us; and that your sentiments are concurrent with mine, which are, that one universal Father hath given being to us all; and that he hath not only made us all of one flesh, but that he hath also, without partiality, afforded us all the same sensations and endowed us all with the same faculties; and that however variable we may be in society or religion, however diversified in situation or color, we are all of the same family, and stand in the same relation to him.

Benjamin Banneker, 1731-1806

 Words For January

"If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me and for the good news, you will save it."
    ^ Mark 8:35 (CEV)

Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.
    ^ Proverbs 1:19 (NIV)
