 Words For December [2003]

Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.
Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot wash it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of his house for love,
it would be utterly scorned.
    ^ Song of Solomon 8:6-7 (NIV)

 Words For November

Church leaders who do their job well deserve to be paid twice as much, especially if they work hard at preaching and teaching. It is just as the Scriptures say, "Don't muzzle an ox when you are using it to grind grain." You also know the saying, "Workers are worth their pay." Don't listen to any charge against a church leader, unless at least two or three people bring the same charges. But if any of the leaders should keep on sinning, they must be corrected in front of the whole group, as a warning to everyone else.
    ^ 1 Timothy 5:17-20 (CEV)

Why did I use the above for this month? The more obvious reason is that our church is electing deacons right now. This passage is a part of several biblical passages which discuss leadership. A more subtle point is to cite a passage that gives authority to "scripture". Paul's second quote here actually refers to Luke, or Christ's words as scripture. So 2 Timothy 3:16 is only one of the many passages which support the power of scripture in our lives.

 Words For October

Lift up your heads, O you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty,
the LORD mighty in battle.

 Words For September

The Eight Beatitudes of Jesus
1You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.
2You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.
3You're blessed when you're content with just who you are - no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can't be bought.
4You're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat.
5You're blessed when you care. At the moment of being "careful", you find yourselves cared for.
6You're blessed when you get your inside world - your mind and heart - put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.
7You're blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That's when you discover who you really are, and your place in God's family.
8You're blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God's kingdom. Not only that - count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable.

 Words For August

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds.  He is the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word.  When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
    ^ Hebrews 1:1-4 (NRSV)

 Words For July

A controversy about ritual purification sprang up between John's disciples and a certain Jew. They went to John and told him, "Rabbi, the man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, the one about whom you testified - look, he's baptizing, and all are going to him!"

John replied, "No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent ahead of him.' It is the bridegroom who gets the bride, yet the bridegroom's friend, who merely stands by and listens for him, is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom's voice. That's why this joy of mine is now complete. He must become more important, but I must become less important."
    ^ John 3:25-30 (ISV)

 Words For June

The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.' "

Eve's interpretation here in Genesis 3:2-3 raises some interesting points.  If she & Adam had not yet eaten from the tree, how would they know that disobeying God was evil and that dying would be bad?

 Words For May

May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all.  Then we'll be a choir--not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!

So reach out and welcome one another to God's glory.  Jesus did it; now you do it!

    ^ Romans 15:5-7 (MSG)

 Words For April

Love must be sincere.  Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.   Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with God's people who are in need.  Practice hospitality.  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
    ^ Romans 12:9-14 (NIV)

 Words For March

   Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding!
   Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
   Do not forsake her, and she will guard you;
   Love her, and she will watch over you.
   The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom;
   And with all your acquiring, get understanding.
   Prize her, and she will exalt you;
   She will honor you if you embrace her.
   She will place on your head a garland of grace;
   She will present you with a crown of beauty.
    ^ Proverbs 4:5-9 (NASB)

 Words For February

We cannot both be right
About right and wrong
And God and man...

I want what you ask of me this time
Please step up to the line
He's my everything
Action begs reaction

What is left to be said
Anything less has all been done before
So put to rest your wondering
If you could take my life
You'd still ask for more

 Words For January

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance:  Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst.  But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.
    - I Timothy 1:15-16 (NIV)
