better way to quickly find what you need on the web; see my post about Google for details.
Northern Light Search used to be
good for articles and other stuff, but it's now a pay site.

ixquick - "the world's most
powerful metasearch engine!" I believe it - queries 11
major search engines and prioritizes VERY nicely. Search the
web, news, mp3s, or pictures.

DogPile.com - another good
metasearch
AskJeeves.com is another approach to searching by
simply typing in a question - it's quite nifty.
refdesk.com - "The single best source for
facts on the net." Another good (non-customizable) "home" page
with a Site-of-theDay, Thought-of-the-Day, Fact..., news stories,
photos, dictionary, Google.com search, and a whole lot more.

I used to subscribe to their RSS feed, but they usually have over a dozen articles a day. Their FileForum is also a great way to find good apps with lots of user reviews, as well.

down those long links! For example, I snipped a mapquest link that has driving directions from Maine to Alaska snipurl.com/longdrive. See my blog entry which details other short URL

Spyware Warrior
- Not sure what that virus-like activity is
messing up your computer (most often causing popups on your
browser)? It's probably spyware - there are a lot of tools to help
you stop it. This is a good blog to start (see the Tutorials on
the right column).

faster, so you best be protecting your system. Here's another good recent article touting alternative virus software
besides Norton and McAfee. Added '04Nov12
