Spanish Dancer (1923) festival screenshots

A quick look at the grand festival from this Paramount silent drama. Tinted yellow, with bonus shots in plum and black and white from other parts of the film.

Reviews of the 2023 Milestone/Kino Lorber Blu-ray are easy to come by, but none of them show the grand Festival of the Madonna, followed by Carnival. This was my favorite part of the film, about 12 minutes long, starting at the 36-minute mark.

Compared to the storyline, I was more impressed with the costumes (Howard Greer), cinematography (James Wong Howe), and set design (?). Screenshots are from the Blu-ray, which is based on the 2012 Eye Film Institute restoration (likely a 2K-scan). Image quality varies since it is based on four different film elements. These shots seem to come from the best of these elements.

The festival

Revelers dance through an archway

Maritana greets her grandmamma

I watched this segment several times, taking in all the revelers in costume: as animals, skeletons, and on stilts, just to name a few. The extras were clearly having a good time.
