My IMDb votes explained

You may have noticed my Internet Movie Database (IMDb) lists on my About page or frequent appearances on my FriendFeed. I’ve been adding movies to IMDb for a long time (I currently have 1501 of them); while the website usability hasn’t improved much in its near-20-year lifetime, IMDb has been a handy free database. I’m often criticized for my 1 to 10 rating of films, so maybe this rundown will clue you in to why I rate movies the way I do. I add notes to some of my ratings, too, which you can read on my Seen list.

Working on some site improvements

I’ve been up to a little site maintenance. I finally got a license in the footer, but I’m still trying to figure out the best way to back up my FriendFeed in the right column. I’m also trying to tweak my site feed so that the “Read the rest of this entry” cut-off shows up instead of the annoying 50-word automatic cut-off or full post.

2009 Challenge: Climate crisis epiphany

As I watched “the most important meeting in human history” last week, I decided that the COP15* would be a good topic for The Best of 2009 Blog Challenge. More specifically, seeing this chart (below) about global warming triggered an “aha! moment” for me. Over the past couple of years, the majority of scientists have come to a consensus on realistic numbers indicating the human impact on climate change. Here is my brief attempt to make sense of what’s going on and what we can do about it.

Lala Music Mover uploads your whole collection

As sure as the wind blows, an online music service that you use today will likely be gone (or have very limited functionality) in six months. Fortunately, most of the options I mentioned in my finding music online post from June are still viable, but I’ve found two great new sites (Lala and Grooveshark) to replace the big one that seems to have died (imeem – yeah, MySpace bought it). Of particular interest is the Lala Music Mover software which uploads your computer’s whole music collection so you can play it on their site. Main interface screen shot:

East Coast Thanksgiving

I haven’t made the drive to Philadelphia in quite a while and this was my first trip along the Louisville-Philadelphia route. I crammed in a lot of driving, but couldn’t pass up the chance to visit Rachel and Liz in DC, as well. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to have dinner on Sunday with my dad’s side of the family; I want a Permanent Vacation.

Here are a few of the 37 photos from my Thanksgiving Flickr set:
