World Cup soccer in South Africa

The FIFA World Cup starts in less than 3 days. It’s good to see South Africa (the country that recently brought us District 9, Invictus, and Die Antwoord) hosting and I hope this month’s competition brings the world just a little closer together. This is the first time an African nation has hosted. Leaving politics aside, though, here are a few handy links to help you stay on top of the action.

  • The home country kicks off the competition on Friday evening (10am EST). Official schedule PDF.
  • ESPN already has phenomenal coverage of the games. I just watched some of the US/Aus “International Friendly” match from Saturday on ESPN 3 online (free for most ISPs). Between ABC and ESPN, every game will be aired on television in HD. Here’s a good rundown of online and offline coverage from EPL Talk.
  • I’ll probably be creating a fantasy draw on Yahoo!. The official FIFA site and ESPN also have good fantasy pages for the World Cup. The VisaGoFans Facebook app is a handy way to see what teams your friends are rooting for; their calendar of the games is also very easy to use.

The official theme song of the games: Shakira’s Waka Waka
